Town Wide Mosquito Control Spraying

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health reported West Nile Virus has been detected in mosquitoes in Winthrop. The Winthrop Health Department has made arrangements with the Northeast Massachusetts Mosquito Control District for a town wide truck spraying to be done on Monday, July 26, 2010 between 10:00PM to 12:00AM.

There are no significant risks to truck spraying. Safety precautions include: 
  • Avoid mosquito bites
  • Apply insect repellent when outdoors
  • Shut all open windows facing the street during the hours of truck spraying
  • Avoid walking pets during truck spraying
  • Remove areas of standing water around your home which can serve as breeding sites for mosquitoes
  • Empty containers around your home that might collect water
  • Swimming pools should be kept clean and properly chlorinated
Please call the Northeast Massachusetts Mosquito Control District at 978-463-6630 if you do not want your house sprayed, leave your name and address.

Family Day at the Beach July 24, 2010

Family Day at the Beach July 24


The Chamber of Commerce 13th annual "Old Fashioned Family Day at the Beach" takes place Saturday, July 24 from 11 am to 4 pm. Yirrell Beach on Point Shirley will be the place for fun in the sun: see flier. In the event of rain, the event will be held on Sunday, July 25.

No need to pack a lunch as there will be hot dogs, sausages, and hamburgers on the grill, along with pizza and cold drinks.

Schedule for the day is as follows: 11:00 – Scavenger Hunt, 11:30 – Simon Says, 12:00 – Water Balloon Toss, 12:30 – Look Alike Contest, 1:00 – Adult Spelling Bee, 1:30 – Winthrop’s Got Talent, 2:00 – Hat Contest, 2:30 – Dance Contest, 3:00 – Hula Hoop Contest. There is free parking at the Town Landing, 651 Shirley Street; however public transportation & carpooling is strongly encouraged.

The "Revolution" will be doing boat tours of Boston Harbor at 10 am, 12 pm, and 2 pm for just $10 (first 100 people). Meet at the Town Pier at the Public Landing.

DJ Jeff Lyons will be playing music, kids can jump on the moonbounce or go down the water slide, along with raffles, games, and other activities. Special thanks to the Winthrop MarketPlace for their support.
