Winthrop's Joint Report to Consolidate - Boston Globe Story by John Laidler

GLOBE NORTH NEWS BRIEFS
April 15, 2010
WINTHROP

KEEPING IT SEPARATE — Town Manager James McKenna and School Superintendent Steven Jenkins have prepared a joint report examining the potential consolidation of certain general government and school functions. Prepared at the request of the Municipal Council and the School Committee, the report looked at the financial, management information systems, and human resources functions of the town and schools and concluded that a significant consolidation would not be worthwhile. But the report recommends the town reestablish three positions — town auditor, grants administrator, and human resources manager — that would serve both the town and the schools.

Town Tackles Twittering -- Globe Newspaper by John Laidler

WINTHROP
TOWN TACKLES TWITTERING — Residents have three new ways to stay informed about town business. Recently, Winthrop opened a town page on Facebook, a Winthrop Twitter account, and a town blog. Michele Karas, the town’s webmaster and information systems director, created the town’s social networking tools and is handling all the writing, which will cover information ranging from advisories about street closings to public meeting notices. “It’s a great way of connecting to the world that everyone seems to be becoming part of, these new networking communities,’’ said Karas, who is also Winthrop’s assistant finance director. An added bonus is that all three involve no cost to the town. Karas said the Facebook posting, Tweeting, and blogging complement the town’s other electronic communication mediums, the municipal website, and the e-mail news advisories it sends to those who sign up. Karas said that within a week of creating the Facebook page, the town had acquired 78 “friends.’’ The town site, www.town.winthrop.ma.us, contains links to Facebook, Twitter, and the town blog. — John Laidler ©
